Diários na Estrada

Teaser

Pontos fortes do projeto

Edição: Organização de todos os materiais audiovisuais gravados, enviados por anônimos e pelos personagens da trama. A interligação entre todos os dispositivos fará com que se perpetue a troca de informações através do site e de jogos criados especialmente para esta retroalimentação antes das gravaçoes, durante e depois na fase de difusão;

Argumento

- Os personagens leem a parte que descreve o encontro dos anos 70 dos diários e recordam de sua maneira como viam estes fatos os no passado;
- Os personagens vêem projetados no telão com a sua família e amigos fotos e videos feitos durante a viagem e tb alguns materiais audiovisuais enviados pelos fãs ;

Background

In the mid 70s, as a young woman in my 20s, I hitchhiked across the Americas, finally arriving in New York City, USA over two and a half years after starting the trip in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over the course of my travels, I met amazing characters, heard incredible stories and had uncountable adventures. All of these are captured in my journal.

More than a film, or a simple reconstruction of that trip, Journals on the Road is an interactive, co-creation platform. I will use various mediums – social media, apps, video, radio, TV --  to actively seek out the places and people I met on the road. Viewers will become co-creators, as they send their own photos, videos, and information. Together, we will construct a story in which I retrace my steps and explore the memories, now nearly 35 years old, contained in my journal.

Main protagonist

Beth Formaginni

Strategy
The project will be implemented in various stages:

  • Research and development -- Design the applications and online platform. Publish the journal excerpts, highlighting the names of the people, places and subjects that will form the basis of the script. Air targeted spots on TV, radio, and internet with the objective of seeking out and finding the people, please, and subjects for the script. Publish the information, images, and sounds received through this process to the online platform.

  • Script -- From the feedback received to make a trip to complete the pre searches lease and characters that we already contacting since the beginning of the process . Final script of the chapters of the series .

  • Production and Recording -- Reunion of the author / director with the characters 35 years later . Uptake observational manner.

  • Editorial -- Organization of all recorded audiovisual materials , sent by anonymous characters and the plot . The interconnection between all devices will cause to perpetuate the exchange of information through the website and games created especially for this feedback before the shooting , during and after the diffusion phase.

Activities

  • Insert content on the website and social networks like Facebook , Tweeter , Instagram etc
  • Produce calls tv and radio spots and newspaper ads to try to locate the people or their descendants and friends , or even people who have also gone to these places.
  • An online platform will serve as an interactive space where co-creators can upload their stories and pictures.
  • Post to website journal excerpts , characters and materials submitted by fans and archive materials of the trip , such as photos , drawings and maps .
  • Develop scripts from feedback search
  • Conduct additional research
  • Create website programming and mobile devices , games and other interactive platforms. Use gamification devices to encourage and reward those who travel to find the characters or have more material.
  • Write the text of the journal in the voice of the director / author
  • Record open takes of the cities
  • Record footage with the characters
  • Edit the materials and stories and journal into a book

Visual approach
Devices and language are repeated in all chapters :
The director reads her journal and shows pictures off camera, under a take of the location revisited 35 years later. In the case of Rio Sao Francisco we will see images of flooded cities with pictures of the dam.

The new routine and reunions of old friends will be recorded in HD with the techniques of observational cinema. We will talk and get caught up, as well as reminisce about old times. The characters hear traditional songs recorded in the 70s and tell us about what they are singing or listening to now. The characters read the part of the journal describing their encounter 35  years ago, and tell their own version of the stories and the way they remember the past events. The characters also see on a projector photos and video material from the trip as well as audiovisual materials sourced from viewers / co-creators through the online platform.

Innovation
Journal of the Road will be partially told through film and partially told (and co-created) through an online platform bringing together web materials,  social media, mobile apps, and digital TV. Supports of the project will be acknowledged through visibility on the platform.

People will themselves to disclose information to the site and their networks of friends in a feedback process created by the program, in direct communication with the project team involving the characters found , friends, neighbors , co-workers , in addition to fans of the project and making it something special for them.

Sponsors will reward those who travel to find more information or have characters on them : videos , movies, super 8 , newspaper articles , photos , interviews with cell earning points in a game device. We will involve internet users and viewers of the 3 Americas in a work of collective creation .

Story
Due to the innovative nature of the proposed Project, which is co-created in real time with viewers and users of social media, the story will unfold as we create it. While we cannot give a definitive overview here, the story will be divided in 13 chapters, and will be based on stories such as these highlights:

  • Cooperative Huaran , Cuzco . I lived there six months, interviewing and taking pictures of farmers there, as well as recording their songs. The family of José Zúñiga , martyr of the occupation of the farm , live in the old mansion farmer. At that time his son was a baby but today should be around 36 years old and would be a central character of the chapter along with their mother.

  • Cooperative Huaran, Cuzco Peru.
  • Cipibo Indians, with whom I took ayausca near Pucallpa in the Peruvian Amazon. From the journal: “We took the potion and the mind-body connection began to undo itself.. colored fish came up swimming together… geometric multicolored shapes, in impressive symmetry, came together and apart like a caleidoscope, like a mechanism of thought… it was something like chemical structures of the brain disintegrating…. Zuuuum, and then, only flashes, I don’t remember everything but brilliant flashes of light were coming and going, everything zooming, me, an insect, dying. The phase of dying was the worst, I was dying little by little, really feeling my death, with great lucidity and consciousness of every moment.
  • I also met Brazilian expats in Peru, like my cousin Darcy Ribeiro and his friends Malú , Bessa, Thiago de Mello and Zenildo. We stayed in an apartment near a discoteca, with an amazing library, hot bath, comfort and luxury, after a year of nothing of that sort. We listened to music, swam in the Pacific, georgeous mollusks that burn and amaze the eyes, with crazy shapes. Debora is an American sociologist, intelligent, free crazy about Darcy. The four of us, me Chris, Debora and Darcy were involved in long talks, stories and craziness. So much love and care, we were building something together, slides and takls about Mozambique, Angola, Guine-Buissau, Tanzania and Somalia, a film about Chile, Cuban film, everything was wonderful. What a week! The sun setting on the Pacific, a red ball, is beautiful in Lima… but ugh, what an ugly city!
  • Oaxaca, Mexico, where I lived with a family who taught me the ancient art of weaving. In Eduardo’s house live his mother, father, brother, sister in law and two kids, his wife and their three kids, plus the fiancée of his son who will stay there for one or two years before they get married. The designs they use in the weaving are inspired by ancient stone carvings, or cloth that one generally finds in magazines written by gringos or for gringos. They reproduce these ancient, pre-Columbian designs. They also invent or compose their own designs. The colors are incredibly beautiful… There are so many artisan shops, where the signs on the door read “Welcome, Come in, 100% wool sarapes.”

Synopsis
We intend to develop a collaborative, interactive series that will trace the people and places I visited during a trip across the Americas between 1975 and 1977. Travelling between Rio de Janeiro and New York City, I met many different people, recorded interviews, wrote hundreds of pages in my journal, took pictures – and most of all, made many friends.

One group of friends was a theater troupe in Alcantara, Maranhao. Another was a group of peasants who occupied a farm in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where I lived for six months. Another is a band of Chipibo Indians, with whom I took ayauasca near Pucallpa in the Peruvian Amazon. Yet another was a crew of documentarians from the Grupo Cine Labor in Mexico City, where I worked as an assistant. Still others were artisans in Oaxaca that hosted me in their home and taught to weave. I also met Brazilian expats in Peru, like my cousin Darcy Ribeiro and his friends Malú , Bessa , Thiago de Mello and Zenildo. Jazz musicians in Oakland, California… The manager of the band Jefferson Airplane, who had lived in Brazil and welcomed us at his home in San Francisco… And factory workers in Denver where I worked to earn money for my plane ticket back to Rio at the end of it all.

We will publish parts of my journal on a website linking to the various social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and web applications developed for the project. We will also use radio, TV and social media to find out where these friends are today. Depending on what we find, some will characters in one of the 13 chapters of the series. We expect to receive a vast amount of material from the characters themselves, but also from their friends and relatives, or others who traversed these same roads.

Our direction, then, will follow the lead of the viewers / users / co – authors and they will have an active role in transmitting as well as receiving information.

By reconnecting with these people I hope to understand what has become of them and their surroundings over the course of nearly 35 years. And – why not? – I will also take a look at how I see the world today compared to the vision I had as a 20-year old, which will be narrated in the first person through the journal.

Short synopsis
Journal of the Road begins with an account of a trip through Latin America. The journal was written in the 1970s, over a period of two and a half years, when the protagonist hitchhiked from Rio de Janeiro to New York City. This project seeks to reencounter the people and places cited in the diary, through an interactive web platform and social media links. The innovation lies in interactivity with the audience, who send information and images via internet and mobile apps, such that they are not passive spectators, but active co-creators in the project.

Expected date of completion outubro 2017

Expected length of documentary 13 CHAPTERS WITH 50’EACH AND A LONG FEATURE 75 MIN

Pgm 1 - Rádio Nacional “A Gente Faz Um País”

Pgm 2 - Revista O Cruzeiro - Fotojornalismo

Pgm 3 - As Organizações Globo - um quarto poder?

Pgm 4 - Globo Repórter anos 70: O Cinema Na Tv

Pgm 6 - Web e Midiativismo hoje

Pgm 7 - Os Nanicos - Pasquim, Movimento, Ex.

Pgm 8 - O nascimento do rádio e a Radio Mec

Pgm 9 - Experiência das Tvs Públicas - Tv Brasil E Tv Cultura

Pgm 10 - Daniel Hertz e A Luta Pela Democratização Das Comunicações No Brasil

Pgm 11 - Sem Concessão - A Experiência De Rádios E Tvs Comunitárias.

Pgm 12 - As Pioneiras: Tv Tupi E Tv Record - Festivais Da Canção

Pgm 13 – Imprensa sec XX : O Jornal Do Brasil, Correio Da Manhã, Última Hora

Synopsis

This series searches for the origins and reveals the evolution of a traditional and popular music instrument – the pífano, also known as pife. It tells its stories, its construction techniques and its playing techniques. PGM 1 – THE ORIGIN – Cacique Aritana, from the Yaualapiti Indigenous village – Alto-Xingu – MT;

PGM 2 – THE INSTRUMENT – Biu do Pife and Chau do Pife, with the Banda da Pífanos de Caruaru, João do Pife and the Banda Dois Irmãos, in Caruaru – PE;

In this city, Carlos Malta will play with and talk to other musicians to whom the pife has been important and with whom he has worked with: Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil and Egberto Gismonti.

THE REGISTRATION – A campaign for the listing of the pífano as an intangible heritage.

Director’s Intention:

Observational cinema – Malta is the guiding line. The camera observes and follows the action, without interfering, even though our film crew is present, interacting and enabling the transformation of the people into characters. The handheld camera moves to wherever Malta’s action directs it. When he talks and plays the pife with his interlocutors, the camera is very close. When the character moves, the camera moves back and the long shots with wide-angle lens reveal the landscape of the places that are visited, the popular houses and the human landscapes. Malta invites his masters for group presentations. During the concerts, the camera approaches the musicians, who are highlighted in the foreground, with details of the pife in their hands. Two shots of the members of the bands, who communicate musically with one another. A group creation, promoting an alchemy of wind music. The camera is aware of the gestures of the affectionate and musical encounter, expressed in looks, touches, smiles and reverences.

Conversational cinema – The spoken word: Malta talks to his informants. The stories are narrated by the characters through their unique language: a way of talking, playing, singing and storytelling of each particular location. We will search for the poetic discourse of our people, who’s heritage is the oral tradition. The conversation registers the relationship between Malta and his interlocutors, capturing his singularity, as well as that of his masters, and the “verbal situation” caused by this encounter stimulates the performance of the actors. The duo is captured in a two shot. When the narrative intensifies, the shot closes in and the character/actor is.
