Sinopse:

Synopsis

At the age of 70, the life of Robertinho Silva is a symphony in four movements, and this is how our film is structured. In the first movement, the umbanda, the samba and the forró from his childhood days, in Realengo, a neighborhood in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. In the second movement, the sambas, boleros and bossa novas of the great radio orchestras inspire the boy to play in “the balls of life”. In the third movement, he imprints the rhythm into Brazilian Popular Music. Milton Nascimento presents the drummer to Brazil and to the world.  In the fourth movement, his partnership with João Donato, Robertinho researches and teaches Brazilian rhythm, reencountering, through percussion, the ancient musical masters.

Director’s Intention:

The film is structured like a symphony: we will record the soundtrack with Robertinho on drums, imprinting its beat. The camera, in travelling shots and with a crane, surrounds him closely as he plays on his own and, as it turns, it widens the shot to show a new partner each time.

Studio: He receives his guests who will participate in the creation of the soundtrack. The movements of this symphony are marked by Robertinho’s beats in duos with musicians who have been important in his career. The drums explode and the camera opens up in a spiral, revealing the piano where Wagner Tiso sits, or, in another sequence, Milton Nascimento. In this moment of intimacy, they remember the band Clube da Esquina and talk about the influence that Robertinho’s beat had on the music from the state of Minas Gerais. The camera opens up and reveals the meeting with the upright bass of Luis Alves, or Cauby, the meeting of two drum sets, Wilson das Neves and Robertinho play in a duo and talk about the great drum players. After that, João Donato’s piano, as he talks about his last concerts around the world. The camera travels circularly and opens up in an even wider turn to reveal Robertinho and his sons, the Silva family plays together in a mix of drum sets and percussion, with close-ups of his drum collection.

Stock footage of Robertinho playing with greatest jazz and MPB musicians of Brazil and the world. Edson Machado plays the drums in his unique style. Robertinho interacts musically with these images projected in a studio.

External Shots:

Observational cinema: Robertinho is the guiding line: we indicate locations and people that Robertinho visits and meets and subjects that we would like to broach. From that point on, the camera observes and follows Robertinho’s action, without interference, even though our film crew is present, interacting and enabling the transformation of the people into characters. The handheld camera moves to wherever his action directs it. When he interacts with his friends, the camera is very close. When the character moves, the camera moves back and the long shots reveal the landscape of Central do Brasil, the Realengo neighborhood, Lapa and Copacabana.

Observational Cinema: Our work will prioritize the poetic, comical and emotional discourses of this artist, who is a natural born performer. Using his personal experience as a starting point, we can arrive at a comprehension of the history of our own music. The camera registers Robertinho’s relationship with his interlocutors, capturing his gestures and expressions. The duo is captured in a two shot, always attempting to register the signs of companionship between the musicians, their complicity. During the conversations, the camera approaches the narrator, who is highlighted in the foreground.

Lira

Gênero: Documentário
Formato: HD
Duração: 52’
Produção: Beth Formaggini/ Valeria Burke
Direção: Beth Formaggini

Sinopse:

A conversa é longa e decisiva.
